A relaxing break was the highlight of our weekly agenda. We’d bid successfully at a fund-raising event for a night at Ravenswood Manor, which offers boutique B&B accommodation overlooking Lake Karapiro — just a 10-minute drive away from our Cambridge home.
The imposing manor is set in extensive manicured grounds — large trees were beginning to shed colourful leaves. The manor is furnished in French-style elegance with many pieces collected by the owners on frequent visits to Europe.
Our premier Ravenswood Suite had a king-size bed, comfortable armchairs, a very very large bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, small kitchen, large TV, own princess patio with restful views down one arm of the lake to distant bush and hills. Heaven!
Although we could have ordered a degustation dinner we opted to drive over the Karapiro dam — a few minutes away — to the cute Podium Café situated in the Mighty River Domain by the Don Rowlands Event Centre. It’s only open weekends for dinner but most days for lunch. The food is excellent.
There are several relaxing walks in the immediate area plus cycle trails, kayaking, water skiing and jet boating — something for everyone who is into keeping fit and/or having outdoor fun.
Breakfast is included in the tariff and elegantly presented in the dining room, which offers views across the impressive grounds. Freshly-prepared fresh fruit salad and yoghurt was followed by a ‘farmers’ breakfast of the scrummiest scrambled eggs ever, plus bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, croissants and home-made jam.
We’ll definitely return when the need for a relaxing night of luxury arises.
